  • The FIFG FootGolf World Cup Orlando 2023 Crowns Its World Champions

This FootGolf World Cup displayed its global reach with trophies won by six countries in individual and team competitions ORLANDO, FL, USA, June 9, 2023/EINPresswire.com/ -- The Federation of Internation FootGolf (FIFG) ceremoniously concluded its biggest and most successful FootGolf World Cup on the evening of June 6 at Planet Hollywood at Disney Springs in Orlando, FL. Exhausted but exhilarated by nine days of world-class FootGolf on five challenging courses spread across Evermore Resort's Grand Cypress and Walt Disney World Golf's Palm Course, 972 athletes from 39 countries ate, drank, sang, and danced to celebrate the six countries which would carry World Cup trophies home: Individual Men - Hungary, Senior Men - Norway, Women – Slovakia. The team winners were: Men-France, Senior Men-Argentina, and Women-Japan. Global, indeed. The individual championship final rounds were played on the Evermore Orange course earlier that day. In the Women’s Division, Slovakian Lucia Cermakova (-20) began the day in second place behind Japan’s Naoko Miura, who went 1-over on the first five holes and never found her stride, while Cermakova birdied four of the first five holes and never looked backed, eventually landing atop the leaderboard with a 9-under round and a 5-shot win. Marit Schaap of Holland (-15) was second, and Miura and Sandy Levittas of France (-10) tied for third place. Bence Bacskai of Hungary (-37) began the day leading the Men’s Division field by three strokes and widened it to four with a 9-under round and a victory over Argentina’s Gonzolo Novosad (-33), who rolled an 8-under round but could never catch up to Bacskai. Simon Rigaud of France (-30) won a third-place tiebreaker over teammate Thomas Felix. Jan Aksel Odden of Norway (-31) roared out of third place to defeat third-round leader Sebastian Godoy of Argentina (-29). Odden played a flawless round with seven birdies and no bogeys, while Godoy, who led by three strokes after three rounds, struggled on the back nine, including a double-bogey 7 on the par-5 15th hole. Tieing for third place at -28 were Gabriel Garcia of Mexico and Frederic Hedin of France. In the team competition Women’s division, Team Japan eked out a 2-1 win over the battling Team Slovakia. In the two singles matches, Naoko Miura, with substitute Masumi Oyama defeated Valentina Flajzikova 4 and 3. Lucia Cermakova dispatched Rina Akutsu and her substitute Yuuka Kiryu 6 and 5. In the foursome (alternative shot) match, Japan’s Haruka Maeda and Saori Kawazoe, along with substitute Erii Yamashita defeated Slovakia’s Klaudia Nemcova and Silvia Zahradnickova 2 and 1 in the tightest match of the day, securing Japan’s World Cup trophy. Team Slovakia also advanced to the Senior Men’s division team finals, facing Team Argentina, which toppled the Slovakians 2-1 with all matches coming down to the last two holes. The first singles match featured Slovakian Marek Vittek and substitute Igor Gabris defeating Argentine’s Fabian Ayala and substitute Pablo Donatti 1-up. Argentina’s Sebastian Godoy and substitute German Lavallen evened the match with a 2 and 1 victory over Slovakia’s Branislav Thron and substitute Stefan Blahovec. Argentina’s foursome (alternative shot) team of Sergio Toth and Roberto Ghezzi, with substitute Norberto Oscar Conte, secured Argentina’s World Cup victory with a tense 2 and 1 win over Slovakia’s Jozef Mraz and Viliam Mozolak, with substitute Jan Holic. As expected, the Men’s division finals between France and Argentina was the most competitive of the day, ending in a cumulative-holes-won playoff. The French singles team of Camel Meriem with substitute Nicolas Cozzi dominated the Argentine’s Gonzalo Novosad with substitute Diego Murua, 7 and 6. Argentina bounced back in the second singles match, which saw Ruben Leffler and substitute Nestor Garaventa dispatch France’s Thomas Felix and substitute Tony Rhodes, 6 and 5. The third singles match went to Argentine’s Nicolas Garcia and substitute Giovani Anzisi, 3 and 2. Argentina’s lead was 2-1. The first foursome (alternative shot) match ended tied with both teams winning five holes, between France’s Kevin Place, Corentin Coirnot, and substitute Christophe Delissus playing stroke for stroke against Argentina’s Guillermo Sandoval, Facundo DeGatica, and substitute Diego Tripailao. France’s Christopher Buaillon, Alexis Bellanger, with substitute Adrien Hunault tied the match in the second foursome 1-up, over Argentine’s Andres Bilancieri, Lucas Loustau, and substitute Julian Marini. The match was tied 2.5-2.5, with the tie earning one-half point for each team. France took the match lead 3-2 with a 2 and 1 victory in the first fourball match with Simon Rigaud, Damien Dyrdol, and substitute David Thomas defeating Argentine’s Patricio Lahitou, Aaron Macsad, and substitute Brian Villarreal. With the World Cup at stake, Argentina’s second fourball team of Christian Otero, Matias Perrone, with substitute Fernando Mentasi, in the last match of the day, defeated France’s Cedric Bonnot, Fabien Helbois with substitute Antonio Balestra 1-up. The match was tied 3.5-3.5, taking it to a cumulative-holes tiebreaker. The World Cup match tiebreaker is based on the total number of holes won by each team. France built an early lead winning 8 holes to Argentina’s 1 in the first singles match. Argentina bounced right back, winning 7 holes to France’s 2 in the second singles match. Score: France 10, Argentina 8. The third singles match thrust Argentina into the cumulative holes lead, winning 5 holes to Frances’s 2. The first foursome match was a tie, with each side winning 5 holes. The second foursome match went to France with 5 holes won to Argentina’s 4. Score: France 22, Argentina 22, and two matches remaining. The World Cup trophy would rest upon the feet of the fourball teams. France took a 2-point lead in the first fourball, 6-4. Argentina cut into France’s 2-point margin in the last match of the day, but by only a point, 4-3. France triumphed in the tiebreaker by a razor-thin margin of 31-30, taking home the Men’s Team Division 2023 FootGolf World Cup championship trophy. • We’d like a few minutes of your time.

Not everything has gone smoothly and you deserve to know why. Hello, everyone: We’d like a moment of your time to explain what’s become a frustrating perfect storm of a technology failure and Mother Nature’s whims. First, The Federation for International FootGolf (FIFG) had planned and tested the live scoring function available for the 4th FIFG FootGolf World Cup app (FGWC) and shown on the live CTV Sports broadcast. So far CTV Sports viewership as of yesterday was as many as 1.675 million. Unfortunately, our technology provider vastly underestimated the number of people around the world who attempted to access the scoring and destroyed the server. Our technology provider has struggled to rebuild the program onto a new, dedicated server that we hope will be running and stable by the end of today, June 2. We are very sorry that the technology failed to perform as planned and contracted - it has made life difficult for all of us. We greatly appreciate your understanding and patience, and we all look forward to live scoring happening on a screen or mobile device near you today. Then, Mother Nature forced the golf management at the resort to make difficult decisions on June 1 due to the possibility of lightning striking the area. As a rule, golf courses have strict protocols regarding inclement weather and use lightning detection technology to keep people safe. That technology identified lightning within eight miles of the courses filled with FootGolf competitors and set into motion an evacuation plan that, frankly, did not go smoothly and for which we apologize. We have learned from that and constructed a new plan we’ll implement going forward, starting today, June 2. Players and guests will be better informed and moved to safety and then back to playing, when all is clear, more efficiently. We can’t control the weather, but please trust that the FIFG and its golf course partners’ first priority is the safety of everyone on the grounds of FootGolf World Cup activities. Thank you for your understanding, and please stay safe. Sincerely, Harvey Silverman

  • Building a New Sport Takes Vision and Leadership

Meet South Africa’s Mr. Norman Mphake South Africa has a rich sports history, including soccer and golf. Now, FootGolf has entered the South African sports scene, led by Mr. Norman Mphake. Read more about how one man’s leadership has South Africa’s national FootGolf team heading to the 4th FIFG FootGolf World Cup Orlando 2023. “FootGolf in South Africa was officially established in 2014. Subsequently, I was invited to join and assist in the development and growth of the sport. I formally started taking full responsibility for the sport as the executive director in 2017. FootGolf has been and continues to be the best professional gift I have given myself or allowed myself to be a part of. It is a journey like no other, especially for someone like me who has played, taught, coached, and administered sport, to have the opportunity to build and mold a sport with no historical baggage in a (sporting) society plagued by unpleasant historic undertones and experience. FootGolf, for me, is truly the first “democratic” sport in South Africa. It is challenging but rewarding to be part of a team that is determined to introduce a new sport in a country where people have built their lives and sometimes their identities into and around other traditional sporting codes (i.e., golf and football). I believe that the opportunity we have been granted to participate in the upcoming FIFG FootGolf World Cup may and will change South Africans’ and possibly the African continent’s sentiments and views about this beautiful sport. Knowing that we are not only going to the FIFG FootGolf World Cup - Orlando 2023 to compete with the 38 other counties but that will be representing and showcasing Footgolf from not only South Africa but from the entire African continent is a victory and heart-warming achievement for us – but please note that we are not opposed to podium finishes. So, in closing, it would therefore be appropriate to cite the American sports journalist, broadcaster, and author, Howard Cosell, in that: ‘The ultimate victory in competition is derived from the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your best and that you have gotten the most out of what you had to give.’” Thank you, Norman. We look forward to meeting you and your team in Orlando! Mr. Norman Mphake is the founder and executive director of the Physical Education Institute and Sport Association (PEISA) and of FootGolf South Africa (FGSA). He is also the co-founder and Managing Director of International Fitness Professionals Institute (IFPI) as well as a director of HeadStart Kids. PEISA is a multinational organization, committed to advocating for active engagement, skills development, debate and research, knowledge sharing and setting the foundation for a healthy, active, and physically literate populace, through meaningful partnerships and strategic collaborations. FGSA is the official governing body of FootGolf in South Africa. A new hybrid sport. FootGolf is a combination of the popular sports of football (soccer) and golf. The game is played with a regular #5 football at a golf course on shortened holes with 53-centimeters diameter cups. Similar to golf, the object of the game is to get the ball into a hole (cup) in the fewest possible number of kicks. A round of FootGolf consists of playing 18 such holes. IFPI was established to address the need to produce professional staff for the Fitness Industry and to seek the requisite professional recognition for the trainers and consultants, consistent with other professional bodies, through the provision of high quality, affordable and accredited Health and Fitness education and training opportunities. Headstart Kids, is a philanthropic organisation set up to combat micronutrient deficiencies (hidden hunger) in children within the early childhood development (ECD) sector. Mr Mphake is the content expert and host of the #Active4Life TV show. #Active4Life is a new interactive, informative and bespoke Quality Physical Education edutainment show, presented by the Physical Education Institute and Sport Association (PEISA) in partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and 2Enable Enterprises. The show, which is televised on DBE TV Openview HD (OVHD) platform – channel 122 and uploaded on the YouTube channel, is designed to entice, enthuse and enlighten learners, teachers, parents and society at large, to support the establishment of healthy lifestyles, behavior and learning in schools, by placing physical activity at the heart of the school and beyond. Mr. Mphake’s academic expertise is in the areas of Physical Education, sport coaching, administration, and talent identification with a higher degree from La Escuela Internacional de Educación Física y Deporte (International School of Physical Education and Sport) – in Cuba. He has experience in policy development and implementation, with a keen understanding of government systems, having worked at all three spheres of government. He has served as a member of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) – Coaches Commission. He has also been an active member of the Board of Directors for Leisure and Recreation South Africa (LARASA). LARASA was formed with the purpose of promoting recreation and leisure as a profession and to create an enabling environment for a unified professional body to promote recreation and leisure as an essential service in the public and private sector. Mr Mphake serves as a member of the Social and Human Science Sector for the South African National Commission for UNESCO (NATCOM). In October 2016, Mr Mphake was appointed as the National Coordinator for the UNESCO Quality Physical Education (QPE) Policy Project. The QPE project is part of a process whereby UNESCO, as the UN agency mandated for sport, education, and peace-building, has joined forces with partners to promote recognition of physical education’s broad-based social and development benefits and to practically support governments revise national policy to be inclusive and child centered. Mr Mphake’s area of expertise include: • Multi-stakeholder relations and co-ordination; • Strategic policy alignment; • Skills development; • Content and curriculum development; and • Early Childhood Development and Basic Education practices. • The Stars Will Shine at FIFG’s 2023 FootGolf World Cup

FootGolf stars representing the FIFG's four world regions - North America, South America, Europe, and Asia/Oceania - will compete at 2023 FIFG FootGolf World Cup. ORLANDO, FLORIDA, USA, April 20, 2023/ -- Soccer, the world’s most popular game, is the basis of the sport of FootGolf. Most footgolfers play or played soccer and transfer those skills from a soccer pitch to a golf course. Many of the world’s best footgolfers competed at soccer’s highest levels, both amateur and professional. And now, recent and past champions are on their way to Orlando to compete in the 2023 Federation of International FootGolf (FIFG) World Cup. There is historical relevance as we highlight several players who fueled the game’s growth in its early days and still strive to compete at a high level. From FIFG’s South America Region, please meet Christian Otero, 44 years old, from Mar del Plata, Argentina. Otero hones his FootGolf skills at La Serranita golf course in Sierra de los Padres, south of Buenos Aires, when he’s not running his premium gelato company, Lucciano’s. Otero competed in his first FootGolf event in 2012 in Las Vegas at an event organized by the American FootGolf League (AFGL). He’s since twice been Argentina’s champion and World Champion in 2016. This fierce competitor also won FootGolf tournaments in the US, Italy, Norway, and Puerto Rico. “I have been training the last two months for the World Cup, where I have very high expectations,” says Otero. “I’m confident competing with the best players in the world. I believe this World Cup the FIFG is organizing will be a fantastic tournament in a magical place.” Photo courtesy: Archive This is FootGolf Magazine From Marseille, France, representing FIFG’s Europe Region, is reigning 2022 world No. 1 footgolfer Cedric Bonot. The 39-year-old automotive technician first competed in 2017 in Paris and finished 117th out of 120 players, a rather inauspicious start. However, playing out of Golf d’Aix-en-Provence golf course, Bonot has since proven himself on the world stage, winning the World Cup as captain with his French team in 2018, along with the French Championship three times, twice the French Cup, the 2022 World Tour, and his current No. 1 world ranking. “It’s a dream to win a World Cup,” says Bonot. “I think it’s the most difficult because you start from zero – no one cares what you won before. You also need to manage both team and individual competitions. And with about 1000 players, this World Cup will be a spectacle to behold.” Photo courtesy: Asociacion Argentina de FootGolf The FIFG’s Asia-Oceania Region boasts 61-year-old senior player Arihiro Eugene Otsuka from Sagamihara City in the Fujino district. Otsuka’s family of soccer and FootGolf players include his wife and three boys. In addition, he is a founder of Music Label, introducing international music into Japan and Japanese music to the world. Otsuka discovered and fell in love with FootGolf while enjoying a vacation holiday on Maui in 2016, on the Ka’anapali FootGolf course. He soon joined the Japan FootGolf Tour and, as a member of the Japan national team, played in the Pacific Trophy, World Cup in Morocco, and two Asia Cup tournaments. In addition, he has often competed overseas at the US Open, French Open, and UK Open and founded the Fujino FootGolf Club. “I am thrilled to be a part of the biggest celebration of this promising sport, which would be a giant step forward in its development, Otsuka says. “The location of this World Cup in Orlando, FL, is perfect, and I know great opponents are waiting to compete.” Photo by: Arihiro Eugene Otsuka Last but certainly not least, Jordan Godfrey is the defending US National Champion from FIFG’s North America Region, hailing from La Verne, CA., and playing out of Arcadia Golf Course. The 30-year-old is a Small Format Sales Representative for Pepsi Beverages North America. Godfrey has achieved domestic success individually and as a club member, including the US National Champion four times (2015, 2020, 2021, 2022) and Club National Champions with West Coast FootGolf five times (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020). Godfrey’s third trip to FootGolf’s World Cup follows the two previous ones in Morocco, where the US team finished third, and Argentina, where the US team was triumphant. Individually, Godfrey finished eighth in Morocco and 16th in Argentina. But, he says, “Winning a World Cup, especially on home soil, would be special because it cements your name in the history of our sport for many years to come.” Photo courtesy: AFGL Tour About the FIFG: The Federation for International FootGolf (FIFG), headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, is the world’s governing body for the sport of FootGolf.
